What in the world is a “devotional” anyways?!
Spend any amount of time in a church, and you are going to hear someone mention their “daily devotional.” However, sometimes the terms we use in churches can leave us scratching our heads! A devotional helps you devote time to God by using the Bible to focus your attention on how God has worked, is working, and will work in you and through you. Simple enough, right?
Devotionals can be in several formats. They can be structured different, have different purposes, and work to accomplish different things. Some devotionals take a passage of the Bible and break it down to show you how it applies to you. Some devotionals tell inspiring stories about Christian leaders who struggled, failed, or succeeded in their own spiritual lives. Some devotionals help us to meditate (contemplate thoroughly) God’s Word. Other devotionals include praise and worship in their program.
What is important is that a devotional is meant to be a “spiritual breakfast” that focuses you on God for the day ahead! They are meant to jump-start your spirit and get you working, praying, and thinking about God. They are an important part of being a Christian, and best of all, they are biblical. In Psalm 1 David writes, “Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” David knew the power of contemplating God’s Word, and examining his relationship with God.
Another cool thing is that devotionals don’t have to be done alone. Although a devotional can be part of a solitary quiet prayer time with God, they are different than a quiet time. Devotionals can be shared with others – friends, family, parents, siblings. You can do them together! Every Monday the staff at Monterey have a devotional together, where we contemplate scripture, see how it applies to ourselves, and spend time together with God.
If you have never done a devotional, or you have no idea what to do for a devotional time with God or with your family, I want to help. There are a ton of online devotionals to choose from, but here are a few that I like:

I’ll be posting some other resources for you to look at in the near future. Remember to make the most of your time, spend it with God!
